Die Herstellung von Primäraluminium ist energieintensiv und muss bei einer ökologischen Bewertung berücksichtigt werden. Gleichzeitig besitzt Aluminium einen entscheidenden Vorteil: Das Material lässt sich wiederholt recyceln, ohne seine grundlegenden Materialeigenschaften zu verlieren. Die Herstellung von Sekundäraluminium aus bereits recyceltem Material benötigt dabei nur einen Bruchteil der Energie, die für die Gewinnung von Primäraluminium erforderlich ist.Für die Umweltbilanz einer Verpackung ist deshalb nicht allein entscheidend, aus welchem Material sie besteht. Auch Materialmenge, Gewicht, Produktschutz, Transport, Restentleerung und die tatsächliche Recyclingfähigkeit spielen eine Rolle. Aluminiumtuben verbinden einen hohen Produktschutz mit vergleichsweise geringem Gewicht und einer etablierten Recyclinginfrastruktur. Voraussetzung für einen funktionierenden Materialkreislauf ist allerdings, dass die Verpackung nach Gebrauch richtig entsorgt, gesammelt und dem Recycling zugeführt wird.
