BAKUCHIOL
DIE PFLANZLICHE & SANFTE RETINOL-ALTERNATIVE
Bakuchiol is a plant-based active ingredient derived from the seeds of the Babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia) and is now considered one of the best-known natural alternatives to retinol. Although Bakuchiol itself is not a retinoid and is structurally unrelated to retinol, it addresses key processes in modern Slow Aging skincare: it supports collagen production, skin structure and regeneration while also providing antioxidant properties. Studies show comparable effects on wrinkles and hyperpigmentation with better skin tolerability compared to retinol. Bakuchiol therefore offers an independent plant-based approach for those looking to address key anti-aging skincare goals without conventional retinol or retinal.
HOW DOES BAKUCHIOL WORK ON THE SKIN?
Bakuchiol supports various processes that are important for skin structure, firmness and regeneration. Studies show that this plant-based active ingredient can influence the expression of genes that are also associated with the effects of retinol, even though Bakuchiol itself is not a retinoid. Particularly relevant for modern Slow Aging skincare is its support of collagen production: studies have described effects on collagen I, III and IV. At the same time, Bakuchiol has antioxidant properties and supports skin regeneration. In this way, the active ingredient combines different approaches for smoother, firmer and more balanced-looking skin.

WHY IS BAKUCHIOL CONSIDERED A RETINOL ALTERNATIVE?
Bakuchiol is neither retinol nor a retinoid. Nevertheless, studies show overlaps in biological processes relevant to skin renewal, collagen production and skin structure. In a clinical comparative study, both Bakuchiol and retinol improved wrinkles and hyperpigmentation after twelve weeks, while scaling and stinging were reported more frequently with retinol. Bakuchiol therefore offers an independent plant-based approach to addressing key goals of modern anti-aging skincare with a focus on good skin tolerability. Unlike retinal, Bakuchiol remains entirely outside the retinoid and vitamin A active-ingredient system. This is precisely what makes it a natural and gentle retinol alternative for us: not because it copies retinol, but because comparable skincare goals can be addressed through a different active-ingredient approach.
BAKUCHIOL & SLOW AGING
Bakuchiol combines several properties that are relevant to a long-term Slow Aging skincare approach. The plant-based active ingredient supports collagen production, skin structure and regeneration while also providing antioxidant benefits. Rather than focusing on a single short-term effect, Bakuchiol supports different processes that are important for firmness, elasticity and a balanced-looking complexion. Its good skin tolerability also makes Bakuchiol suitable for regular, long-term use – an essential aspect of our Slow Aging approach.

BAKUCHIOL AT STUDIO BOTANIC
At STUDIO BOTANIC, we use Bakuchiol in our FACE OIL as part of a plant-based Slow Aging active-ingredient system. Bakuchiol supports collagen production, skin structure and regeneration and is combined with Passioline, which complements the formula with regenerative and skin structure-supporting properties. High-quality plant oils such as hemp oil, passion fruit oil, kahai oil and meadowfoam seed oil additionally support the skin barrier and provide the skin with valuable lipids. In this way, our FACE OIL combines a natural retinol alternative with regenerative and barrier-supporting skincare.
