Beeswax has been used for centuries in ointments, creams and other skincare products. It gives formulations consistency, forms a protective film on the skin and contributes to a smooth, supple skin feel. This is why it still has an established place in traditional natural cosmetics. Beeswax is obtained from the honeycombs of honeybees. For vegan cosmetics, however, it is not an option – regardless of its functional properties. The key question is therefore: can its functions in a formulation also be achieved with plant-based ingredients? Yes. A variety of plant-based waxes offer a wide range of possibilities.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES TO BEESWAX

Plant-based waxes offer numerous possibilities in cosmetic formulations. Depending on their origin, they differ in hardness, melting point, consistency and skin feel and can therefore be selected specifically for different products and formulations. They can perform the classic functions of beeswax without requiring an animal-derived ingredient. There is no single plant-based alternative: depending on the desired properties, different waxes can be used individually or combined. It is precisely this variety that makes plant-based waxes particularly interesting for modern vegan natural cosmetics.

Berry wax:

Berry Wax (Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera) is obtained from the fruits of the lacquer tree. The wax is a mixture of plant fat and free fatty acids, pressed or extracted from the peel of the berries. Berry wax can contribute to the stability and shelf life of cosmetic formulations. It also has replenishing properties and helps keep the skin smooth and supple.

Candelilla wax:

Candelilla wax (euphorbia cerifera cera) is particularly well known . It comes from the leaves and branches of the candelilla bush, which grows principally in North Mexico and the Southwest of the USA. The shoots of the bush are cut and heated to extract the wax. Candelilla wax has a high melting point and is very hard at low temperatures. It also feels pleasant on the skin, is not sticky and binds well with other oils. It is used not just in skin care products but also in hair care products since it gives the hair a beautiful sheen and makes it easy to comb.

Myrica fruit wax:

Myrica (myrica cerifera) is a wax which is extracted from the fruits of morella rubra shrubs. They are grown, cooked, the raw wax is skimmed off, filtered and then processed. What makes it different: myrica wax is considerably softer than carnauba or candelilla wax. Due to its gel-like consistency, it is lighter and less filmy on the skin than beeswax. If a harder consistency is required, such as for lipsticks, a combination of other plant waxes is often used. It is used in skin and haircare products.

Rose Flower Wax:

Rose Flower Wax (Rosa Damascena Flower Cera) is obtained from the flowers of the Damask rose, which originates from Asia Minor. The petals are covered by a very thin natural wax layer that helps protect the plant from drying out. In addition to its delicate floral scent with green notes, rose wax has caring and protective properties and can give formulations a subtle, shimmering finish.

Rice Wax (Oryza Sativa Bran Wax) is a natural plant-based wax obtained from rice bran during the production of rice oil. It is characterised by its slightly yellowish colour and firm, slightly crystalline structure. In cosmetic formulations, it is used particularly as a consistency agent and stabiliseRice wax contributes to a firm, smooth texture and is suitable for creams, balms, lip care products and other anhydrous formulations.

Sunflower seed wax:

Sunflower Seed Wax (Helianthus Annuus Seed Cera) is one of the modern plant-based waxes and provides an alternative to beeswax. It is obtained from sunflower oil. Originally native to North America, sunflowers are now also widely cultivated in Europe, making sunflower wax of European origin an interesting alternative for us. Sunflower wax has very good oil-binding properties, making it suitable as a consistency agent and stabiliser in cosmetic formulations. It contributes to a stable texture and a pleasantly protective skin feel.
